Layover Tips

Making the most of your time at Schiphol

Minimum connection time: 50 minutes
4h: With 4 hours at Schiphol, you're in one of Europe's most passenger-friendly airports. The entire facility is a single terminal building — unusual for a major hub — which means no inter-terminal shuttle stress. Airside highlights: the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam has a small but genuine outpost in the departure hall between piers E and F (open 07:00–20:00, free) with rotating original Dutch Masters paintings including Rembrandt and Vermeer works. Diamonds International has a free viewing of diamond cutting and polishing. Dutch food to try: stroopwafels from a bakery stall, bitterballen (deep-fried beef croquette balls) at any bar, or herring if you're adventurous. For rest, the Yotel airside (landside and airside options) has sleeping cabins. Allow 60 minutes before departure for Schengen flights.
8h: With 8 hours, Amsterdam is exceptionally easy to reach. Intercity trains run directly from Schiphol to Amsterdam Centraal every 10–15 minutes (17 minutes, €5.50 one way). From Centraal, walk into the Jordaan neighbourhood immediately west — the most beautiful canal district, with flower bridges, independent cafés, and the Westerkerk church. Anne Frank House is 10 minutes walk from Centraal but requires booking 2–3 months ahead online; if not booked, the exterior is still worth seeing. Alternatively, rent a bike (Macbike near Centraal, €10/half-day) — Amsterdam is flat and easy to cycle. Eat: Dutch pancakes at Pancakes Amsterdam (Jordaan), or a traditional broodje (sandwich) with gouda. Allow 90 minutes back to the airport, more if cycling return bikes.
24h: With 24 hours in Amsterdam, the city rewards slow walking. Morning: Rijksmuseum (book ahead; allow 3 hours for the Golden Age Dutch Masters collection — Night Watch, Milkmaid) and the adjacent Van Gogh Museum (book separately, equally worth it). Lunch in the Museum Quarter at a café on Cornelis Schuytstraat, then rent a bike for the afternoon. Cycle through the Jordaan and Grachtengordel (canal ring), across the IJ to the NDSM Wharf in Amsterdam-Noord (free ferry from behind Centraal station) for street art, hip cafés, and city views from rooftop Eye Filmmuseum bar. Evening: drinks in Leidseplein or the quieter De Pijp neighbourhood — locals go to Sarphatipark area. Amsterdam's nightlife starts late and runs all night if you want it. Return by train from Centraal — trains run all night on weekends, but allow 60–90 minutes before departure.

By Layover Duration

4-Hour Layover

If your layover extends between five and eight hours, you have a golden opportunity for a quick city visit! The train station is conveniently located beneath the airport, with frequent trains to Amsterdam Central Station taking just 15-20 minutes and costing around €5. Once in the city, try strolling through the historic canals and visiting the iconic Anne Frank House or the vibrant Jordaan district filled with boutiques and cafes. A quick coffee break at Café de Jaren, with its picturesque canal view, is a perfect way to recharge before heading back. Make sure to give yourself at least 90 minutes to return to the airport before your flight.

8-Hour Layover

With eight to twelve hours, you can dive deeper into Amsterdam. Start your journey by taking a 15-20 minute train ride to Amsterdam Central Station, costing about €5. Visit the Rijksmuseum to explore Dutch art masterpieces or take a leisurely canal cruise to see the city's stunning architecture from the water. Later, grab lunch at the famous Foodhallen, where you can sample local flavors in a vibrant atmosphere. For a bit of culture, wander through the historic Anne Frank House or stroll by the picturesque canals in the Jordaan district. Ensure to leave ample time for your return journey to the airport; aim for at least two hours before your flight for security and boarding.

Overnight Layover

A layover of twelve to 24 hours in Amsterdam lets you savor a more relaxed experience! After arriving at the airport, take the train to Amsterdam Central Station (about €5 for a 15-20 minute ride). Start your exploration at the Rijksmuseum, where you can admire artworks from Dutch Masters. Lunch at De 9 Straatjes (Nine Streets) offers a charming selection of boutiques and cafés. Continue to the Anne Frank House for an insightful glimpse into history. Spend the afternoon walking along the canals and visiting the Van Gogh Museum. For dinner, dine at the local favorite, The Seafood Bar, before retreating to your accommodations, either in the city or at an airport hotel, ensuring easy access for your flight the next day.
