Layover in Edmonton
Everything you need for a productive layover — from quick connections to overnight stays.
Layover by Duration
Guides tailored to how much time you have.
4-Hour Layover
With 4 hours, stay near Edmonton International Airport (YEG). Clear immigration/security, then explore the attached Premium Outlet Collection Edmonton International for quick shopping and snacks. If you want fresh air, take a short cab or shuttle to the nearby RedTail Landing Golf Club clubhouse for a drink with runway views (seasonal) or walk around the airport’s outdoor areas. Be back at security 1.5–2 hours before your next flight.
8-Hour Layover
With 8 hours, you can briefly see the city. From YEG, take a taxi or rideshare (~30–40 minutes) to downtown Edmonton. Stroll around the Alberta Legislature Grounds and river valley viewpoints, then walk Jasper Avenue and 104 Street (4th Street Promenade) for cafés and shops. If you prefer indoor attractions, visit the Royal Alberta Museum or Art Gallery of Alberta. On the way back, allow at least 2 hours for transit and airport formalities.
Overnight Layover
With 24 hours, book a hotel either near YEG or downtown. Spend the day exploring the North Saskatchewan River Valley via the funicular and walking trails, then visit the Royal Alberta Museum and the Art Gallery of Alberta. In the afternoon, head to Old Strathcona and Whyte Avenue for boutiques, cafés, and the historic Princess Theatre. Alternatively, devote several hours to West Edmonton Mall for shopping, Galaxyland, or World Waterpark. In the evening, enjoy dinner and drinks on Whyte Avenue or 124 Street, then return to your hotel and back to the airport the next day.
