Guides tailored to how much time you have.

4h

4-Hour Layover

Fort Chipewyan (Fort Chip) is very small and remote; YPY is a short drive from the hamlet. With 4 hours, stay close to the airport. Arrange a pre-booked taxi or ride with your lodge to take you into the community. Walk the compact main area, visit the outside grounds of the historic Hudson’s Bay Company post site and the waterfront on Lake Athabasca for photos. In winter, enjoy the quiet northern landscape and, after dark, potential aurora viewing from just outside town if skies are clear. Be sure to be back at the airport at least 60–90 minutes before your flight, as services are limited and delays in arranging rides are common.

8h

8-Hour Layover

With about 8 hours, you can see the core of Fort Chipewyan and get a feel for this historic northern community. Coordinate in advance with your hotel, local tour operator, or community office for transport from YPY and for any guided cultural or nature outing. Explore the hamlet on foot: walk to the Lake Athabasca shoreline, see the exterior of the historic Hudson’s Bay Company post area, and visit local churches and community buildings that reflect the community’s Métis, Cree, and Dene heritage. In summer, pre-arrange a short boat tour on Lake Athabasca or along the Peace–Athabasca Delta with a licensed local operator. In winter, consider a guided snowmobile or cultural tour if available. Plan time for a simple meal at a local café or restaurant (hours can be irregular), then return early to the airport.

24h

Overnight Layover

A 24‑hour layover lets you experience Fort Chipewyan’s remote setting and Indigenous culture more fully. Book accommodation in advance, as options are limited and can fill with workers and government staff. After arrival and check‑in, walk the community, visit the waterfront on Lake Athabasca, and learn about the area’s role as one of the oldest European settlements in Alberta and a key Hudson’s Bay Company trading post. In summer, arrange a guided boat trip into the Peace–Athabasca Delta or along the lake to appreciate the wetlands and birdlife. In winter, look into guided snowmobile excursions, snowshoeing, or cultural storytelling experiences with local Cree, Dene, or Métis hosts. After dark in winter, step away from bright lights for a chance to see the northern lights. Because services are sparse, confirm restaurant hours, transport back to the airport, and weather conditions well ahead of departure.
