Layover in Gjoa Haven
Everything you need for a productive layover — from quick connections to overnight stays.
Layover by Duration
Guides tailored to how much time you have.
4-Hour Layover
Gjoa Haven Airport (YHK) is very small and basic, with no formal lounges and limited services. In winter, it’s best to remain at or very near the airport due to extreme cold and potential weather delays. Use a short layover to stretch, repack gear, and confirm onward flights or local accommodation by phone or online. If you have a pre-arranged pickup with your hotel or local contact, you may be able to make a quick drive into the hamlet to get a first glimpse of the community and the surrounding tundra, but keep timing tight and confirm return transport in advance. Always dress in layers and carry your own snacks and water, as food options at or near the airport can be very limited.
8-Hour Layover
With about eight hours, you can leave YHK and explore the hamlet of Gjoa Haven if you’ve pre-arranged transportation and a local guide or host. After arrival, head into town by pre-booked taxi, hotel shuttle, or local operator. Start with the Nattilik Heritage Centre, where you can learn about Inuit culture, traditional tools, clothing, and art, and the story of Roald Amundsen’s wintering here during his Northwest Passage expedition. If open, visit the Northwest Passage Territorial Trail interpretive panels around town to understand the region’s exploration history. Stop by the local Co-op or Northern store for a warm drink and snacks, and, if available, browse locally made carvings or crafts. In winter, keep outdoor walking short and stay aware of windchill; in summer, enjoy the stark coastal scenery and long daylight. Plan to be back at the airport at least 90 minutes before departure, allowing extra time for weather or road conditions.
Overnight Layover
A full day in Gjoa Haven allows a deeper experience of this remote Nunavut community. Arrange accommodation and local guiding well before arrival, as options are limited and flights can be weather-dependent. After landing at YHK and transferring to your lodging, visit the Nattilik Heritage Centre to explore exhibits on Inuit life, Amundsen’s stay in Gjoa Haven, and the broader history of Arctic exploration. Weather permitting, walk or drive around the hamlet to see the shoreline of King William Island and interpretive signage related to the Northwest Passage. Depending on season and availability, you may be able to arrange a guided outing on the land or sea ice, such as a short snowmobile excursion, boat trip, or cultural experience with local hosts, where you can learn about traditional hunting, clothing, and food preparation. In late summer and early autumn, keep an eye out for migratory birds and the changing tundra colors; in the darker months, you may have a chance to see the northern lights if skies are clear. Use the local Co-op or Northern store for basic supplies and simple meals, and always build flexibility into your schedule in case weather affects flights or local activities.
