Layover in Ioannina
Everything you need for a productive layover — from quick connections to overnight stays.
Layover by Duration
Guides tailored to how much time you have.
4-Hour Layover
With 4 hours at Ioannina National Airport (IOA), stay close to the city center, which is only about 10–15 minutes by taxi. After clearing formalities, take a taxi directly to the lakeside area (Plateia Mavili). Stroll along Lake Pamvotida’s promenade for views of the water and surrounding mountains. If time allows, walk through the gates of the Ioannina Castle and into the old town (Kastro) for a quick look at the stone alleys and Ottoman-era buildings. Grab a coffee and a light snack at a café on the lakeside or just inside the castle walls. Plan to be back at the airport at least 1.5 hours before your next flight, as IOA is small but you’ll want a buffer for traffic and check-in.
8-Hour Layover
With 8 hours, you can see Ioannina’s core highlights at a relaxed pace. From IOA, take a taxi to the lakeside promenade and walk into the Ioannina Castle complex. Explore the narrow streets, then visit the Byzantine Museum of Ioannina and the Fethiye Mosque for history and panoramic lake views. Continue to the Aslan Pasha Mosque (Municipal Ethnographic Museum of Ioannina) in the northern part of the castle to learn about the city’s multicultural past. Head down to the pier and take a short boat ride (about 10–15 minutes) to Nisi (Ioannina Island) on Lake Pamvotida; wander its quiet lanes, visit the Ali Pasha Museum, and enjoy a lakeside taverna lunch with local dishes like frog legs, eel, and pies from Epirus. Return to the city for a quick coffee in the modern center around Plateia Neomartiron or Averof Street, then taxi back to the airport, leaving at least 1.5–2 hours before departure.
Overnight Layover
With 24 hours, you can combine Ioannina’s old town, lake, and nearby nature. Day 1: Arrive at IOA and taxi to your hotel in or near the castle or lakeside. Start with a walking tour of Ioannina Castle, including the Byzantine Museum, Fethiye Mosque, and the Aslan Pasha Mosque (Municipal Ethnographic Museum). Wander the Kastro’s stone streets and then head to the modern center for shopping and a coffee on Michail Angelou or Averof Street. In the afternoon, take a boat to Nisi (Ioannina Island) on Lake Pamvotida to visit the Ali Pasha Museum and the island’s monasteries, then enjoy a lakeside dinner with local specialties. Return to town for a drink at a bar in the lakeside area or in the castle. Day 2 (morning): If you have time before your flight, take a short excursion by car or taxi to the Perama Cave, just north of the city, for a guided tour of its impressive stalactites and stalagmites. Alternatively, drive or join a tour to the nearby Zagori villages and the Vikos Gorge for mountain scenery and stone bridges (plan at least half a day). Return to Ioannina, pick up any last-minute sweets like baklava or local spoon sweets, and head back to IOA, allowing 2 hours before your flight.
