Guides tailored to how much time you have.

4h

4-Hour Layover

Immigration and customs at MXL are usually quick, but with 4 hours you should stay relatively close. After arrival, clear formalities and use an airport taxi or app-based ride (about 20–25 minutes) to the Plaza La Gran Vía / Plaza San Pedro area in eastern Mexicali. Stroll the air‑conditioned malls, grab a coffee or light meal, and pick up any essentials at supermarkets or pharmacies. If you prefer to stay even closer, remain at or near the airport: relax at the terminal cafés, use Wi‑Fi to plan your trip, and enjoy views of the surrounding desert. Aim to be back at the airport at least 1.5–2 hours before your next flight, factoring in traffic and security lines.

8h

8-Hour Layover

With 8 hours, you can sample Mexicali’s food and a bit of culture. After landing, take a taxi or rideshare (20–30 minutes) to the Centro Cívico area. Walk around Plaza de los Tres Poderes and the government buildings, then head to La Chinesca, Mexicali’s historic Chinese neighborhood, for a meal at a traditional Chinese‑Mexican restaurant. After lunch, visit the Museo Sol del Niño, an interactive science and technology museum that’s fun and educational, or the Museo UABC (Museo Universitario) for rotating art and cultural exhibits. If you prefer something more relaxed, go to Plaza La Cachanilla, a large mall with shops, food court, and air‑conditioned comfort. Return to the airport 2 hours before departure, allowing extra time during peak traffic or heat.

24h

Overnight Layover

A 24‑hour layover lets you experience Mexicali’s signature cuisine, nightlife, and desert surroundings. After arrival, check into a hotel along Calzada Justo Sierra, Boulevard Benito Juárez, or in the Centro Cívico area for easy access to dining and attractions. Spend the afternoon exploring La Chinesca and downtown streets, stopping at Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe and Plaza de los Tres Poderes. In the evening, enjoy craft beer at Cervecería Fauna or Cervecería Ícono, then have dinner at a classic carne asada spot or a renowned Chinese restaurant. If you arrive in cooler months and have time the next morning, arrange a guided trip to the nearby Laguna Salada desert or the Sierra de Juárez area for scenic desert and mountain views (plan with local operators and allow several hours). Alternatively, visit Parque Vicente Guerrero or Parque El Centenario for a walk, then shop and have brunch at Plaza La Cachanilla or along Justo Sierra. Head back to MXL at least 2 hours before your flight, more if crossing from or to the U.S. border region.
