Layover in Palembang
Everything you need for a productive layover — from quick connections to overnight stays.
Layover by Duration
Guides tailored to how much time you have.
4-Hour Layover
With 4 hours at Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II International Airport (PLM), it’s safest to stay nearby. Clear immigration (if applicable) and grab a coffee or light meal at airport cafés. If queues are short and traffic is light, you can take a quick taxi or ride-hailing car to Palembang Icon Mall (about 20–30 minutes each way in good traffic) for air‑conditioned shopping, snacks, and a short walk around. Keep at least 1.5–2 hours buffer to return, re‑clear security, and reach your gate.
8-Hour Layover
With around 8 hours, you can see a slice of Palembang’s riverfront. From PLM, take a taxi or ride‑hailing car to Benteng Kuto Besak and the Ampera Bridge area (about 30–45 minutes depending on traffic). Stroll along the Musi River promenade, photograph the Ampera Bridge, and visit the nearby Kuto Besak Fortress grounds. Then head to Kampung Kapitan or Al-Munawar Village for a look at traditional riverside houses. For lunch or early dinner, try local dishes like pempek at a well‑known riverside restaurant. If time allows, stop by Palembang Icon Mall or Palembang Indah Mall on the way back for coffee and souvenirs. Leave for the airport at least 2.5 hours before your next flight.
Overnight Layover
A 24‑hour layover lets you explore Palembang’s history, river culture, and food. After arrival, drop your bags at a central hotel near the Ampera Bridge or Jakabaring area. Start at Museum Sultan Mahmud Badaruddin II to learn about Palembang’s sultanate past, then walk to Benteng Kuto Besak and the Ampera Bridge for river views. Take a short boat ride on the Musi River to see the city from the water and visit Kemaro Island if time and weather permit. In the evening, enjoy pempek and other local specialties at a popular riverside restaurant. The next morning, visit Al-Qur’an Al-Akbar (the giant carved wooden Qur’an) and, if interested, the Jakabaring Sport City complex. Fit in some shopping at Palembang Square or Palembang Icon Mall before heading back to PLM, leaving at least 3 hours before departure to account for traffic and airport formalities.
